When you start, keep the chips that come off so you have them to replace any missing at the end. If you're making a pen or something similar in size, the chips at the beginning don't matter much, but save one or 2. Keep a soft but very sharp touch as you get down to the final size. I don't usually lose scales at this point, but I have a few times, so If you lose a scale, replace it with one you saved. Attach it with thick CA glue and activator. Once it is set completely, trim it with that very light touch. I finish mine with about 8 coats of Medium Flex CA to ensure the scales never pop off.
